2nd Halloween Check Up Party

October 9th, 2011

Can you believe it’s a year since the first Dental Check up Party. This time last year we examined 80 children in one day. The came in fancy dress, had their faces painted and had an enjoyable dental experience. The places are filling up quickly and we expect to have another successful check up day. Say posted for the photographs!

Kill NS CHILDREN EDUCATION

June 1st, 2011

I recieved such a welcome from the children at Kill National School when I arrived to give a  talk about oral health. What a well behaved classroom, Mrs Mc Nally should be proud! I did a little power point presentation on plaque and how tooth decay develops. The kids were all questions and the talk was really interactive and great fun! Thanks to David our friendly colgate rep who supplied us with toothbrushes and toothpastes. I have heard on the grapevine that the children in Kill are still brushing like mad and timing themselves! The kids made a fab card for me which is in proud display on the practice noticeboard.

Easter Dental Check-up Party

April 29th, 2011

Children dressed up, got their faces painted, coloured pictures and recieved treat bags. It doesn’t sound like your regular dental check up appointment, does it? Here at Church Street Dental & Implant Clinic, we are a family practice and we understand that your children need to be entertained. This is an event we plan on holding twice a year, during the Easter and Halloween school holidays. So watch out for our next party day and make sure your child is there. OUR COSMETIC EVENING

April 15th, 2011

Our cosmetic evening which was held on 30th of March was a huge success. There was a great turn out and everyone learned more about the new procedures we are carrying out. All staff members were present and available to chat to patients and answer any questions which they had. The practice was essentially open that evening and people were free to wander around, view our premises and our 4 surgeries. Cosmetic procedures were carried out in the surgeries by our dental surgeons and orthodontist. There was a jovial atmosphere in the practice and hopefully this will be a yearly event from now on.

Six diagnosed with cancer after free mouth exams

JOANNE HUNT

FREE MOUTH examinations offered by Dublin and Cork dental hospitals last September found cancers in six people, organisers have said. The exams were part of an awareness day organised by mouth, head and neck cancer survivors along with Dublin Dental School and Hospital, Cork University Dental School and Hospital and the Irish Cancer Society.Of the 1,800 people who attended the Dublin open days, 29 suspicious lesions requiring biopsy were found as well as three early cancers and two established cancers.Of the 1,393 people who attended the Cork events, 49 pre-malignant lesions and one cancer were found.

A further person, unable to remain in the queue on the day of the Dublin event, later attended his GP and was referred back to the Dublin Dental Hospital where a cancer was discovered. The former barman, now in his 40s, became addicted to the secondary smoke in his work environment and took up cigarettes after the 2004 smoking ban was introduced. He is now undergoing radiation treatment for the cancer.

Mouth, head and neck cancer is the sixth most common form of the disease worldwide. Three Irish people die from these cancers every week, a greater number than those who are killed by skin melanoma or cervical cancer. The term “mouth cancer” can refer to cancers affecting the lips, gums, cheeks, tongue, palate, tonsil, throat, salivary glands, nose and the larynx.Symptoms include white or red patches inside the mouth, a lump in the mouth or neck, thickening or hardening of the cheek or tongue, a persistent sore throat and hoarseness, persistent nose bleeds and a stuffy nose, and unexplained loose teeth.

Early diagnosis and treatment can result in five-year survival rates of more than 80 per cent, versus rates of 10-35 per cent for advanced cancer.Supporting the awareness campaign were novelists Peter Sheridan and Lia Mills, who survived the condition, and Phelim and Cliodhna Drew, children of the late Ronnie Drew, who had throat and lung cancer.Dr Denise MacCarthy, a consultant in restorative surgery at the Dublin Dental Hospital, said: “We were overwhelmed with the public’s response to the open days. While the exam was not a definitive test for head, neck and mouth cancer, it was a visual exam of superficial tissues and superficial instances are the most common presentation in the mouth.”Dr Eleanor O’Sullivan of Cork University Dental Hospital and School said: “There’s a strong link between many mouth, head and neck cancers and smoking and alcohol intake. The open days gave us the opportunity to inform people of the signs and symptoms, and encourage them to attend their dentist or GP for a check-up.”Both dental hospitals say they will be continuing to raise awareness of mouth, head and neck cancer this year

A Posotive Dental Experience!

October 28th, 2010

Cavan’s first check up party for children was held on Tuesday 26th of October at Church Street Dental & Implant Clinic. This novel idea is the first of it’s kind in Cavan and by demand will be the first of many!  Over 80 children between the ages of 4 and 12 were examined and enjoyed the party atmosphere at the practice. All children wore their fancy dress Halloween costumes and they had their faces painted and they coloured pictures while they waited. We had a puppet show and magician who mesmerised the children and it was the only time during the day that there was relative silence in the practice! It was a fun filled, crazy and fantastic day and was thoroughly enjoyed by children, staff and parents. The children were so pre-occupied with the fun they were having and the new friends they were making, they forgot any fears or apprehension they felt . Joanne, Peter and Sarah educated parents on the causes of tooth decay and dietary advice.  Edel, our dental nurse, carried out  individual oral hygiene instruction and each child had a chance to use disclosing tablets which stains the plaque on their teeth. Parents were very impressed with this individual oral hygiene attention. As a reward, each child received a treat bag which contained, small toys and stickers.  All in all it was a hugely successful day and a day that may children will remember for a long time.
